A couple of weeks ago we were introducing fetishism through the famous novel 50 Shades of Grey, that gave us the idea for this series of posts on our blog. In these books the mainstream audience is exposed to a more specific branch of fetishism: BDSM. This now popular acronym, however, seems to raise a lot of misconceptions. Let’s clarify the terminology first: BDSM includes bondage and discipline (B&D), dominance and submission (D&S), and sadism and masochism (S&M). This variety of terms allows great freedom of preferences to those who practice it. But few people know their cultural referents.

Does Baron Leopold Von Sacher-Masoch ring any bells? No, he wasn’t the inventor of the delicious Sachertorte, but the word “masochism” originated from his last name! This term was coined in 1886 by Austrian psychiatrist Richard Freiherr von Krafft-Ebing in his book Psychopathia Sexualis. In his novel Venus in Furs (1870), turned into a movie in 2014, Sacher-Masoch presents the romantic but stormy story of Severin von Kusiemski, who is in love with Wanda von Dunajew and asks her to be her slave. Other literary references for BDSM that might sound more familiar are the books by Marquis de Sade, like Justine (1791) or The 120 Days of Sodom (1789), that also inspired Pasolini’s film in 1975. As we can see, BDSM goes a long way back in the history of eroticism!

Currently though, there are many and very common misconceptions about it. For example, the belief that in BDSM people suffer or are abused, which is not true because it’s a game, mostly a role play in which the submissive often gets to set the rules. Calm down. There is a huge difference between submissive people within BDSM and real abused people: the latter don’t get to choose when and how they’re being hurt and the abuse is real and uncontrolled, whereas the first ones are asking for it voluntarily and they can stop it whenever they want, with a safe word.

Believe it or not, in a dominant-submissive relationship both parts care for each other and want to satisfy the needs and desires of the other person. Another erroneous idea is that all BDSM practicers are promiscuous: they can be in monogamous relationships as well, and they can want to enjoy their lifestyle only with one partner. Also, the interchangeability of roles is possible, sometimes the submissive can play the dominant and vice-versa, if the partners want it that way.

Unlike Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele’s adventures made us think, people who are into BDSM don’t necessarily have had to suffer a traumatic or abused childhood. They don’t have to be damaged people. BDSM can be a natural way of experiencing sex and of pushing one’s limits between pleasure and pain. In fact, it is not always about sex and this is why BDSM encounters are called “scenes”, referring to their performative nature. During the scenes people can use the toys they prefer, be it ropes, beaters, whips, chains or anything else, as these are not the only elements or objects used in bondage.

Contrarily to what one might think, BDSM is extremely safe or it should be, this is, it shouldn’t be practiced without doing tons of research first. So, if you are interested, start small and slow so that you are sure of what you will and won’t do (that’s why there are soft and hard limits). BDSM is about fulfilling your fantasies in a risk free way, and that’s why the acronym SSC (Safe, Sane, Consensual) is so important within the practice. Also, it is common to have a wrap-up step called “aftercare”, which means taking some time after the intensity of the experience to decompress and to share thoughts or feelings about it, which can be a great bonding moment.
